The 3d models are for the cinematic cutscenes. They're also used to render the 2d sprites you see in-game
Hmm... we could always modify the HL2 engine for a StarCraft FPS :D but just after we finish this mod ;)
This mod will entirely use the StarCraft: Brood War engine so we can't really create a "completely" new game :)
