I have been modding pretty much since I first started PC gaming. I had been hop-scotching between projects on Pirates of the Caribbean, Call of Duty 2, Civilization IV to build up my graphical skills and understanding of games. For several years, I was focused on Company of Heroes, being a 2D graphic designer for Company of Heroes: Eastern Front.

Company of Heroes: Modern Combat

Mod review

In terms of gameplay, Modern Combat doesn't pull any surprises or give players anything particularly new. It is still in a very familiar vein to vanilla Company of Heroes - the units, pacing and tactics are (for the most part) the same.

This is not necessarily a bad thing though - Company of Heroes is a very tight game, and this mod matches it fantastically.

Despite such similarities, it still feels very fresh. The overall design is brilliant and it is evident that the developers have worked painstakingly to bring this world to life. The attention to detail is far reaching and is embedded into every crevice of this mod. There are plenty of interesting new assets and the supplied maps are fun to play - especially with custom structures and foliage. It definitely doesn't look like 1940s Normandy!

I have noticed a collection of minor issues. However, not only am I confident that all of them will be ironed out in future versions, but also none of them are particularly major. Therefore they aren't factoring into this score.

Don't expect this mod to completely turn CoH on its head - instead expect a slightly different (yet exceedingly high quality) take on your favourite RTS!
