The word otaku actually refers to "one who is obsessed" Because most anime/manga fans are, indeed, obsessed, the word is now most often used to refer to them. Otakoism is the "religion of anime" if you can call it that. It's a very lax religion, but it SERIOUSLY eats the money out of your pocket, because it demands that you splurge your money as often as possible on anime/manga.
