Good, balanced answer to a very inflammatory comment.

Place training grounds just within the entrance. I usually have a group of dedicated military gnomes and a militia for extra manpower.

Multiple tinker benches do seem to increase research speed.

I did play the demo and I thought it would be an issue but it isn't so much. I would like sometimes to be above ground but would that just ruin the immersion in the story?

Is the entire game underground?
