I have never played Freelancer so here are my ignorant questions/suggestions.
Who gives the orders on the field, the lord or you?
If it's your lord perhaps you might be in charge of an increasing number of men, i.e. your own squad.
Perhaps you enlist as one of the three main troop types - cavalry, infantry or archers - and at some point depending on rank are the leader of the whole unit.
