@ficholina actually, currently in rewrite, the 2016 versions of Fringes will allow this (eventually, we're in early access still)

No, but you can outfit your ship. You are assigned to a specialty ship. There are modding features, however, so you can create custom content. Sorry for the late reply! I honestly was not aware of this until now.
There seems to be a problem with this video. Watch it on YouTube: Youtube.com
hey thanks for your support. i did try a kickstarter campaign but it was back in 2010. I received a total of $10 from my one friend =D .. 2 people have bought the full version ($29.95), but a few pizzas doesn't really free me up to do much, and this game is now becoming niche (Windows only, maybe one day a Linux port). I'd still love to finish it -- but without funding it will have to sit on the backburner for a while. I am working on another one called Fringes of the Empire, which is for Mac/Windows and will possibly have mobile versions. It is not as procedural, but still has some of the charm of this game.
I really like this game for its completeness (lots of things to do, lots of little nuances) and for its humor. Wonderful stuff. Would love to collaborate on something someday

Please check out Empire in the Sky on Desura, we need testers!
We're doing per-pixel lighting and chromatic perturbances on our planets! More stellar geology coming soon!
Newer iterations now boast more features such as precipitation, accumulation, lightning, tidal forces, drought and monsoon seasons.
We updated your ticket in the Empire in the Sky "Issues thread".
Yes, that's a ship's shield.
thanks! please help raise awareness of the project
Exactly why I came here, too! Cool beans! Thanks for "watching" us @ Lost Astronaut's Empire in the Sky
Molest Shakespeare? Never! Well, the game is called Empire in the Sky, but yeah I see what you are saying. Thanks for the comment.
It is a bold undertaking, one which has proven costly thus far, which is why it is a 'labor of love' .. I have to admit I had to nix a lot of really cool features to get combat to remain fast. I will do my best to deliver a great game, but OpenGL is not really made to do this. OpenGL relies on "baked geometry" and this game is somewhere around "half baked", making certain things kinda slow or limiting. With more time I can optimize it further. Hope to see you in August when the demo rolls out to get some *ahem* gentle feedback on what you think is missing. Cheers m8
Gifted component designers can manipulate scale to create warped perspectives -- as seen by the three towers on the central component (there are four pictured). This creates an optical illusion that was interesting for a while.
Starbases can be huge -- we've not yet hit the limit on base building, but there is one.
Testing the limits of the system we built this mega-ship. Future versions only allow for 1 engine attachment, unfortunately.
This is an early development test shot, that shows various procedural asteroids in an early stage of design.
Yes, the line from Hamlet is perfect and was discovered early on while searching for inspiration for the game. However, we don't want to be too gender biased! =D One of our voice actresses really enjoys making purple space ships.
This is an early production screenshot and has already been enhanced in the current version of the game (see videos).
An early production screenshot showing first pass at our engine's planetary systems.
Another early production screenshot of our engine producing one of the first planets.
This was the first planet produced by our engine, it is an early production screenshot and may appear differently in the final game.
This is an early production screen shot as we tested our mini-2d lighting system. The actual game may appear differently.
