I’m João (also called João Pedro or JP), a 25 years old Portuguese which lives in France in Prévessin-Möens with his lovely fiancée and proudly works at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. I have an insatiable curiosity, especially regarding scientific and technological matters. I love to hang out with friends and establish long conversations about these subjects. My favorite hobbies are traveling, watching movies and series, gaming, science and technology, reading and sports. I believe in people, I’m the kind of “teaching to fish rather than giving the fish”, and I’m perfectionist, dynamic and a determined hard worker. I have a great sense of humor and I’m self-confident in my principles, opinions and abilities.
As I referred, I work at CERN as a Ph.D. student and as a Materials Engineer, researching and developing the target materials used at ISOLDE for the production of radioactive ion beams. I work in the EN-STI-RBS section of CERN, in the Target and Ion Source Development team which serves the ISOLDE facility. My Ph.D. position is financed by CERN and I’m enrolled at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in a work entitled ”Development of titanium-based refractory nanomaterials at ISOLDE” which is in collaboration with Universidade de Aveiro. Before this position I had a AdI trainee position (since April 2011) at CERN with which I did my master thesis in a colaboration with Universidade de Aveiro. This work was also related to target development at ISOLDE and was entitled ”Influence of microstructural characteristics of calcium oxide targets on the diffusion isotopes”.
Relatively to my extracurricular activities, I was the Coordinator of Núcleo de Estudantes de Materiais da AAUAv (Materials Students Association of the Students’ Union of University of Aveiro), for 2 years (2009 and 2010), organizing activities like conferences and seminars. I was also involved in social volunteering: I was the President of Caritas of Gafanha da Nazaré from December, 2008 to January, 2011. Highlighting, I was a Scout from 1995 to 2009, and it was there that I learned most of the principles and values which drive my life – service, teamwork, citizenship, appreciation of the simple, sacrifice spirit and the “New Man” ideal.
