Make sure you have it patched to v1.06 and then start a new campaign.

All you need is Rome - Total War patched to v1.6 and Alexander. If it kicks you back to the main menu if you try to play the campaign, that means you don't have the correct version.
It appears that AUTO_SAVE:TRUE helps to prevent BI from crashing. The v1.04 and higher patches automatically turns on auto saves, so, just download the latest patch and all should be well. ;)
Are you running the game through ALX or BI? ALX is far more stable. Disabling autosaves can help quite a lot with those random crashes. Go to RTW\DTW\preferences\preferences.txt and change AUTOSAVE:TRUE to AUTOSAVE:FALSE

First of all, are you sure you have Diadochi - Total War? This mod used to be XGM - Diadochi and was a beta version. Just download this v1.0 again and apply the patch.
You will need RomeTW-BI v1.6 or RomeTW-ALX 1.9 to play this mod.
The installer will automatically prefer ALX if you have RomeTW-ALX.exe in the installation directory. Alexander is rock-solid for playing DTW, there are no crashes reported as of yet. BI on the other hand isn't that stable at all and there are numerous engine inherit crashes that cannot be fixed.
Other than that, Alexander has better AI and diplomacy, plus a few minor differences. I strongly suggest playing with Alexander.
You need Barbarian Invasion patched to v1.6 or Alexander v1.9 to play this.
Yes, it does. All you need to do, is point it to the correct folder. The installer will tell you if something is wrong.
It's a very large mod indeed. I don't think releasing it in parts would do any good, I'm not planning on setting up a torrent either at the moment. But I might consider it, if the demand is high enough.
