For the capital ships, all I can recommend is that you view the planet directly. Once you click on the super capital factory, you should be able to click on the upper left ship build icon (if you are going for the Executor-class).
If you cannot click the button to build the super capital, make sure that you have enough fleet slots available. The message about having insufficient research was confusing to me until I figured out I was low on fleet slots.
