Template for an NPC fighter class ship. While player ships have to be fit for close-up views for menus etc., enemy ships are only ever visible in the ingame LOD; for a comparable ship class, the polygon budget is only about one fourth for enemy ships, for considerations of both hardware constraints and artist manpower.
The other important factor in making enemies is modularity - a single enemy type should be able to support as many roles as possible with only little modification to the 3D/2D assets. Thus, the model itself is relatively neutral, featuring only simple weapon mounts that can be switched as needed; special equipment such as sensors, shields or drones is not modeled, delegating visual cues for these features to the texture.
