Me? Well I'm ErastusMercy, the lead voxel artist on the popular Tiberian Sun mod, Twisted Insurrection. If you don't know what a voxel is then I'll put it this way, I make the vehicles. :P In addition to my roles on TI, I've also done Infantry cameo's (The unit portrait you see when purchasing/selecting a particular unit.) for the C&C3 mods Tiberium Wars Advanced and The Forgotten Mod.
The Instigator appears to be The Brotherhood's first real attempt at manufacturing a light tank that was of their own design. Battle reports from the latter part of the First Tiberium War claim that they were almost exclusively used by Nod's now infamous Black Hand. As such it's safe to assume that the tank was one of the many experimental technologies being field tested by the Special Forces group.
Featuring an auto-loaded main gun these compact vehicles required only a minimal crew, were faster and sported a much lower profile than the M3 Bradley, which was Nod's primary tank during that period.
Post TW1 the Instigator would only see a limited production run before being supplanted by the Scorpion. However the vehicle has it's fair amount of supporters and is still seen in active service.

I've always had a soft spot for the Renegade light tank, visually it was by far my favourite of the games redesigned Nod units (even if the widely spaced four track layout would probably be a detriment). The name Instigator isn't canonical I just thought it gave it an aggressive ring that fit with the sleek and fast looking design of the tank.
