Duke Nukem Forever 2013

Mod review

Great mod, enjoyed the overall pacing as it felt closer to the original Duke 3d than the licensed expansion packs such as Nuclear Winter and Duke it out in DC. The pacing of the first level felt appropriate as an introduction to the "new game" as it tied together the level more so than an action filled non stop fire fight would have done and held up well compared with the later levels. One thing that stood out about this mod was the interesting mapping techniques used, what I felt they did different than most mods I've played were small details put into the levels that added a sense of the artists true appreciation for their medium. Things like an air duct that lead to nowhere seemed more realistic than having only one air duct per level with only one linear path, a problem that I felt the Official Duke Nukem Forever published by Gear box had. Other details like triggered events were used in interesting and refreshing ways compared to the "walk past point X, Cue explosion and enemy spawn at point Y". I also felt that the levels were appropriately fleshed out for their considerably large size, giving a sense that each level had true depth and enough to explore that it was worth doing so. I've played mods before that either have great atmosphere or interesting level design, usually one coming at the expense of the other, but I felt the design approach of this mod allowed for interesting paths to be taken without detracting from the over-all aesthetic of the game, which in this case feels like a western themed Duke Nukem, which is exactly how I felt the game was supposed to turn out when I saw those early trailers back in '98 and 2001. While I'm appreciative of gearbox for allowing the world to experience Duke Nukem Forever as it turned out, I'm equally ecstatic to be able to play this mod which is the game the way I felt it was supposed to be, Thank you to the authors for this experience and I hope to play more amazing Duke mods/expansions by you in the future :D
