The cities on the battle map are vanilla RTW cities. The work involved in making custom cities is immense and in many cases impossible. Minas Tirith is, for example, not doable with the RTW engine.

You need to download:

FATW - The New Shadow v2.0b + TNS 2.6 Patch + TNS Musicpack (obtional, but recommended) + FATW - Wars of Men (obtional) + TNS 2.6 Hotfix

Those are older releases. FATW is being released with a modular approach, where each new instalment builds and expands upon - and also includes & improves - each previous campaign. The latest release, The New Shadow, therefore has the other campaigns (Corsair Invasion, Forth Eorlingas) included, and they are not available separately - TNS is for all intents and purposes the "All-in-One" pack. If you wanted to try them out you'd have to uninstall TNS, or install to a separate version of RTW.

Glad you like the mod. Yes, the whole of Middle-earth, with the Elves, Dwarves and Dale, will eventually be included in the mod.

This is an error you get when you install the mod over the wrong version of BI. You need to check that version number again by going in-game, clicking on Options, and checking the top right corner. If you have 1.4, delete the "ci" folder, install the v1.6 patch, and reinstall the mod.

We don't have a release estimate for the full campaign, I'm afraid. As for Arnor, it is a part of the Reunited Kingdom.

This is for Rome: Total War - Barbarian Invasion v1.6. We also have a version for RTW v1.5.

You need to update BI with the v1.6 patch. You can find out which version you currently have installed (probably 1.4) by going in-game, clicking on Options, and checking the top right corner.

Hmm, sounds like your PC may have a problem with our batch file. You can try the .rar version of the mod, which you can find here: Thefourthage.org

Scroll down to 'RAR Version of The New Shadow 2.0b'. There is also a .rar version of the 2.5 patch in the LATEST PATCH thread in the same forum.

Thanks! Glad you like the mod! There is a way to edit city buildings, it's just so insanely difficult and time consuming that only two RTW mods have done so successfully. We don't have the manpower, at the moment, to attempt it.

There are great tutorials for learning how to mod on the sites I named above - text editing in Rome - Total War is fairly easy compared to some games. If you subscribe to the mod you will get updates when we have new releases, and a RTW only version will be on our to-do list.

Yeah, only with Barbarian Invasion so far. The dos window opens because the mod is installed in its own mod folder (so that it does not interfere with your vanilla installation), so it needs to copy files from your existing BI folder to a new location, and install the mod files over that. The usual installation path is: C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War (though if you have the Gold edition it is The Creative Assembly instead of Activision).

Making mods can be easy or difficult depending on what type of modding you want to get started in (modelling/skinning more difficult than coding, in RTW at least) - I'd recommend you take a look at the modding forums at twcenter.net or totalwar.org

RedepitionAD: It only works with BI v1.6 expansion pack - a version for RTW may not be too far away. I'm not sure what you're asking about re: the MS-DOS archives?

popcap200: You need to install 'Forth Eorlingas' v1.5 first, then the 1.9 patch, and then the FE Music Pack.

There are new unit voices in the new version - or you could always turn them off in preferences.txt (/Rome - Total War/bi/ci/preferences).

koda-95: What kind of error do you get?

king: check the latest news story - there are links to everything you need to download there (the Forth Eorlingas base download, and the music pack is downloadable here at ModDB, but not the latest 1.9 patch - yet).

Chav: It does work with Gold, but make sure you have BI patched to 1.6 (some Gold editions are only 1.4).

ieyasu: I have personally read everything Tolkien has written at some point or another - and the research part of the mod took literally years. Here's a description of some Easterlings from 'RotK: The Siege of Gondor':

'Not tall, but broad and grim, bearded like dwarves, wielding great axes. Out of some savage land in the wide East they come, we deem.'

Now, if those cannot be described as 'barbarians', I'm not sure who can.

ieyasu: The mod is for BI 1.6. We have extensively researched all of Tolkiens works, and our units are all based on what is in the books. If you read the books you will find that (i) the Men of Rhûn were indeed a 'barbarian' like people, (ii) the Haradrim used metal (probably bronze for most of their armour, steel for weapons; no where in the books does it say that they didn't use metal). I'm not sure why you bring up the movies, as there are countless instances of the movies not following the books - one prime example is the movie Easterlings; a designer at WETA got it completely wrong, and based the movie Easterlings on the Haradrim of the book (they even use the Haradrian black serpent emblem). This would also explain their brazen armour.

We have no plans to mod M2, yet, but we'll have to see what the future brings.
