Roma Surrectum II

Mod review

This is a great mod. The graphics are hugely enhanced, the music is really nice, the historical accuracy is superb, the AI is slightly improved, the campaign is HUGELY improved.
Everything is great... except for one thing, the combat.

Guys, I understand that you wanted to create more realistic battles. But with RTW's engine that is simply not possible.

Problems with combat.

First problem: Unit sizes are too high. The high number of soldiers on each unit only succeeds on making units get stuck more often because of one guy not on position. Also there's a strange bug where units don't face the way I commanded them to see. Instead they sometimes look a bit to the left, which is fatal in case of missile fire. It also makes sieges a crashing bore and a pain in the *** for the attacker, but that is mainly because of sieges being lame. 80 soldiers for foot units and 54 for cavalry on large was a good number, you shouldn't have changed it.
Second problem: Very high defense on both infantry and cavalry. This was obviously made for longer, more realistic combats where soldiers have to flank and 2v1 the enemy in melee combat to win.
This was a terrible idea. REMEMBER, this is an old engine with lots of flaws. Even if you completely surround a unit using 2 units it requires a lot of time and men to kill.
Another problem with high defense is that infantry charges doesn't do jackshit.
Cavalry having that much defense is a huge mistake. Missiles doesn't kill medium and heavy cav. Infantry have serious problems dealing with heavy cav. Even spears and phalanx units standing still have difficulty dealing with heavy cavalry even if cav. charges at their front.
In other words, cavalry is even more OP'd and unbalanced in RS2 than in RTW.
Third problem: Phalanx and hoplites are too weak. I've been beating the best Macedonian phalanx and hoplite units with mere polibians.

RS2 is an improvement on many ways except on the most important feature: the combat. Good, but not better than RTW
