Ultimate Apocalypse Mod (DOW SS)

Mod review

Bringing an old game back to life is a difficult endeavor. The labor of love that has been poured in the Ultimate Apocalypse Mod is amazing.

Masterfully this mod brings several of the units I will never purchase for my 40k miniature collection and tosses them down into Dawn of War. The titans help elevate the game into what feels like the natural progression of the first DoW game and keep it close to the namesake of the table-top.

The number of new units might seem like a chore to some players, but luckily the devs had updated the AI to autocast SOME abilities, reducing the micro and allowing you to focus on the macro elements. Beware though, some units in your arsenal if not directed properly can cause devasting friendly fire.

Movement and position are even more vital for all the tacticians wanting to conquer. There are plenty of new strategies that can be deployed. Setting up a layered defense or a well-coordinated assault are both viable tactics.

Several new maps are included, with many of the older ones updated to this mod. While the AI needs to be tweaked for a few of the maps to deal with the obstacles/environmental components. Each new map feels like it belonged in the original game.

Rough around the edges at times, a little bit of lag hurts the experience, but this is due to the old game engine trying to deal with the plethora of units causing hell across the map. While the 4GB patch helps; if there is some method of allowing our modern gaming systems to push the mod harder it would be the only complaint I have about this mod. Otherwise, be ready to turn down your graphics settings to avoid the lag.

I'm eagerly awaiting the release of 1.9. Race balance, AI improvements, and engine enhancements are some of the biggest features I hope to get worked on.

Otherwise, this mod is delightful in its current state and appreciate the hard work the developers have put into this massive project.
