Permission denied while running emerge --sync

chainer8472 Blog

I tried to update portage tree. It is done by command emerge --sync, but only what it did was error Permission denied for all files.
There are two ways to fix it, just run it under root :).
Or change rights

chown -R chainer:portage /usr/portage

and than update using emerge.

Sabayon 7 CoreCDX and AMD/ATI Radeon 6850

chainer8472 Blog

Intro
Desura linux client will be realesed I hope soon so I have finally decided to install some linux distro.
At first a wanted to use Gentoo because of its natural customization capabilities, but Gentoo computer has two states - turned off and compiling, so I have decided for Sabayon 7 distro. It is in equilibrium between usability a customizability.

Sabayon versions
Sabayon is in three major version - spinbase, corecdx and main with GUI. My first try was with Sabayon 7 KDE and I decided to throw it away, because it is full of unnecesarry garbage.
Then lightweight spinbase version was candidate, but text installer did not have capability of manual partitioning. It is only function in graphical instalator. And Sabayon manually, no way, I am not going do it Gentoo way.

XServer problem
So I burned CoreCDX image, booted it up, and nothing. Graphical instalator doesn't not work, flux box and safe mod neither. XServer just do not want to start. After running startx command that just prints "fatal server error: no screen found". In this Sabayon build is not proprietary AMD/ATI fglrx driver, it uses opensource radeon resp. radeonhd driver. So in booting parameters just add parameter "xdriver=radeonhd" and boot it. For my Radeon HD6850 it worked (let KMS enabled).

Second Xserver problem - slow keyboard
In framebuffered console keyboard was with radeonhd driver slow. I was unable even to login in that, but in Flux Box it was ok. In /etc/X11/xorg.conf was as driver selected vesa.

Outro
Now I have working Sabayon with FluxBox environment. But it still needs lot of work - resolution, KDE, may be fglrx drivers.

---Edit---

So it is strange it works, because according to [1], driver radeonhd is for GPU r7xx and driver for my Radeon 6850, which is r900 [2], is radeon [3]. May be this why it has that crappy resolution.

--Second edit--
My fault, boot parameter must be "xdriver=radeon", because it seems after installation, properly drivers are missing. Even problem with generic vesa driver and keyboard is now solved.

Witcher: Enhanced Edition on gog.com

chainer8472 Blog

Hi! Yesterday, I think, was released Witcher: Enhanced Edition on gog.com for promo price $4.99. With game you can download some other stuff like artbook or soundtrack.
This offer has finally forced me to buy this game. Playing time is aproximatelly 60-100 hours so I have something to play after upcoming exam period.
On official forum I have seen some guy asking help how to add censorship into game. Funny, I don't get it, how someone would want to play game based on Sapkowski's world with censoreship, it must destroy atmosphere.
It is DRM free. I like their "You bought it, it's yours, do whatever you want." policy.

Penumbra: Overture

chainer8472 Blog

Game
One of the best games I have ever player. Horror atmosphere have been freezing blood in my veins all the time. This horror game is not based on heard attack moments like other else. Player experiences constant thrill during playing - I will never forgot moment I was crouching behing boxes and trying to pass though hall guarded by that evil undead dog.

Engine and graphics
Graphic is pretty good, you can see some nice light transformations, textures are good looking, models too. Physical engine is top even now, possibility of manipulation with objects is extraordinary and you cannot find something like this in other games. Only Source engine limits to Penumbra's HPL1Engine.Sometimes is criticized presence of weapons in game or strange fight system. Fighting with enemies is chalenging and if you cannot beat them, still you can fool them. For me, it works fine.

License and distribution
You can buy version directly from Frictional and this way obtain version for Linux, Windows even for Mac. And it is DRM free and now even opensource. Son do not hesitate to buy.

Trine

chainer8472 Blog

Distribution
I bought humble bundle version of this game. At first very pleasant thing was multiplatform package. And not in that stupid look multiplatform = windows + consoles. In this package were native Linux and MacOS versions, for Linux even x64 variant.
This method certainly is good way, because if you look on statistics you could see interesting trend - there is 1/4 of customers from Linux platform and they are paying 3 times more than Windows users. So argument it is economically unefficient is wrong. Linux users are used to support developers.

Game
Trine is not exactly classic platform based game, but it is entertaining good looking. At first I was worried about character switching, I really like rogue's rope bow :), but it surprisingly works pretty well even for me. So jumping via rope with switching into knight smashing skeleton with hammer is just a fun.
Playing time was sufficient and enough long to don't get bored. But may be they should add one level more, because last level wasn't so good as rest of game, but maybe it was me - I don't like time rush.

Conclusion
Good game without DRM and even for Linux platform. In Humble Bundle package another games are just a little bonus.
