we all have our favorite time periods, so coming to the decision was certainly difficult. However, this period allows us to reasonably include gameplay elements from both the early 18th century, when piracy was still common in the Caribbean, and the second half of the 18th century, when naval contests and colonial rivalries between the great powers were the conflict of the age. It's not perfect for everyone, but no time period is, so it's a decent compromise. But fear not, we will branch out to both later and earlier time periods after the initial one is complete! :)

Specifically, the first time period will be set during the 7 years' war (1754/56-1763)

They can potentially be done as a mod at a later point, but not as a part of the main download of the game

Just FYI I didn't actually make this figurehead, another modeler did for one of the storm engine versions of the surprise. I originally intended to just have it as a placeholder, but then I thought "oh hey, if I make an old-school pitchfork and move the arm a bit...yeah, works pretty well and matches the plans" I've never tried character modeling so I guess it was a bit of a shortcut. I'll have to build a figurehead of my own eventually for other ships, so once I learn how I might go back and make a new version. I might play with the smoothness of the normals and compare it to pictures of other figureheads to see if it needs changing

Thanks for the comments guys, glad you like it! I've been working on the interior as well as some improvements on the exterior for quite awhile now, and they are nearly complete, so you can expect an update relatively soon!

This particular vessel was built from a lower poly model i built for use in the storm engine mods, with additional detail added to the low-poly version. however, most vessels will be built from scratch. Or are you talking about LOD?

Said modeler here, what exactly don't you like about it?

Don't worry! The ability to have advanced control over sails is something we'd love to see too, and is part of why we are making the game. While we will likely have different settings that can be cycled through for simplicity's sake, they will be tweakable and a player who can fine tune what sails they have set well will have a tangible advantage over one who sticks to stock settings. And of course t'gallants and royals ( and hopefully studding sails) will be included where they should!

I also think that a Stephen Decatur storyline would be fascinating...Good thing I happen to be on the development team! There is so much to draw from, his entire career would make a perfect US storyline. The initial focus of the game will be on the seven years war era, so there might be a bit of a wait until Stephen Decatur and the US can be included...but I'll just say I agree completely

Glad you guys like it! But just to be clear, this is a concept render only, and is not an in game screenshot. However, what we are aiming for in the game engine should look quite similar.

well that was the theory yes, and the royal navy kept up that practice for many years with long guns in the wake of the shrouds and carronades elsewhere (on the uppermost deck only) but the constitution has only 30 main deck broadside long guns, and counting chasers a total of 34 long guns. as far as I know the constitution switched over from having long 12s on the QD and f'csle to carronades without having a mix of the two types. by 1812 gun ratings for frigates weren't really accurate, and after 1815 the royal navy changed its rating system to reflect the actual gun count (0ld 38=46, old 36=44, old 32=40 or 42)

56 actually, because of the new bow chasers. in real life she is rated at 44 guns, but that was not the number of guns she carried. in her time, frigates often carried 8-12 more guns than their ratings.the real ship is armed similarly to the one ingame.
