I noticed this answer just now - there was another one here already, and I already pointed out the logical fallacy you made about "mods" and "standalone" (that wasn't of any help for you anyway, as there's a difference between standalone and indie). But now I also spotted an "authority" kind of argument here. Well, since you chose this path, let me use another "authority" argument too. We won the 4th place in the Indie games category. We were included in the official ModDB video as an Indie game. How come no one objected to that?

The one side implication holds, mods are not standalone software. It does NOT follow from that that every software that's not standalone is a mod. In the same manner all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares. What is clear is that you've evaded mentioning of the very essence of what I have pasted before - the Wikipedia's entry on the Indie games. Looks like you've run out of arguments on that one.

"Standalone" is a game you "could just download and play". "Indie" is one developed by an independent group of developers. And it's the third time I'm writing this, backing it up by links to competently written articles. Against them, I've seen only a dictionary, that hilariously turned out to be two-sided blade. Don't let me feel like wasting time and words about me not being a camel.

This may be a cheap way of answering, but

En.wikipedia.org
En.wikipedia.org (links to En.wikipedia.org )

Note the emphasis that a mod use a game's original engine in order to run, and the modification takes place in a space of content (they may almost exclusively use the game's original assets, or they may not use them at all). The content can range from some most basic graphics, all the way to the game scripts, and even compiled code for engine's virtual machine - e.g. QVM files for the Quake 3 engine).

Code-wise, the FOnline engine has nothing to do with the 12 year old FO/FO2 engine. We do use original graphic files (content) on the client side. And I will repeat once more: the notions of "standalone" and "independent" in this context are orthogonal. Just look at the description of the Indie Devs group, to which you belong: "A group dedicated to indie and standalone game development". If standalone and indie were one, why repeat it here?

Also, I am glad that you linked the dictionary. You can see that there are twenty three listed meanings of the word, all depending on context in which they were used. So let me quote the entry with the number 1: "not influenced or controlled by others in matters of opinion, conduct, etc.; thinking or acting for oneself: an independent thinker". Does is sound convincing enough?

First, the game engine is indeed written from scratch, for both the server and the client. Everything mechanic-wise was reimplemented and extended, and the video, sound, network etc. implemented from nothing.

Second, "indie" means "independent", but not in the sense that it is "a game I can run by simply downloading it, installing it, and play it". That would be "standalone". "Independent" means that it has been created by an independent group of developers, without support from a large company and publisher. That is, unless the Moddb changed the meaning of the word, of which I am not aware.

It's likely that you connected to The Life After server (Russian FOnline), the default one set in client. To connect to 2238 server, visit our blog, Fonline2238.blogspot.com and find the instructions for configuring the client (basically, the ip and port of the server, see FOConfig.exe).

No. The client is entirely different application, that use Fallout 2 resource files (master.dat and critter.dat).
