Very nice article. I often do wonder about these systems as well. One that came to mind while reading was the karma system in Fallout 3. (It was the first Fallout I played). I remember the first time I picked up an object that was revealed with red text to alert me that I would be "stealing" it. I clicked anyway, and that triggered a sorrowful tone and the message "You lost karma!" along with an image of a sad Pipboy (or maybe he was frowning and giving a thumbs down, I can't recall). I ended up not stealing as much throughout the game simply because I didn't enjoy the game "judging" me like that. I guess in terms of the quote you supplied, I saw the game as being preachy.
A question: What experience do you have with the religions mentioned? I would assume you may have grown up with them or at least spent considerable time studying them academically to be confident in your exploration of their themes?
