...Louis and Captain Shepard in a heated argument. Listening in we heard the
argument was over a "secret tunnel leading to a fortress" which to us
was no surprise, since we knew exactly what Shepard was talking about. Louis
admitted doubts that Shepard was lying, despite him having a reputation for
both being a leader of Varrock, and for helping defend the city for 13 years.
However, I could easily see how Louis had a point, despite being wrong. It
seemed such an unusual story, a huge tunnel leading to a well-defended
fortress. I myself in his position would not believe it if I had not seen it
myself. We stepped forward and reinforced what Shepard was saying, to which Louis
fell into his throne in shock, he seemed shaken from the words.

Shepard told us he was referring to the hole in Riverwood, and we compared our
stories. It seemed as if they were very similar. Slaves used to dig huge long
tunnels, to make a near perfect defense. The fortress sounded different
however. It was hidden under the ground, since Riverwood was not high in the
mountains. It was a huge wooden fortress that seemed self-sufficient. It made
sense, since getting supplies would mean trekking hours through the huge
tunnel, unless there was a secret faster way to land of course. Shepard
estimated it would only take 4000 men to take that fortress. Half what we
suggested for the fortress we discovered. Coming together we chose to
gather 4000 men and assault the fortress. It almost certainly held answers to Sir
Edward Griefer or Haventon.

Recovering from his shock, Louis sat forward and told us he would support us,
despite the fact he was at war. It was a tough choice for him, but with two
respectable gentlemen in front of him with a proposal, if an odd one, he had no
choice. He gave up 2000 men from the walls of Varrock as well as a huge supply
of weaponry, to which we thanked him. Coming together Shepard still had roughly
1300 men under his command and 743 men with us giving us already enough men to
attack. After thanking Louis for his amazing kindness we left and went off to
assault the hidden fortress within Riverwood.

6:45AM - 13th October - 1586 - Diary Of Sir Walter Shock
I found out the hard way, moving 4000 men is not an easy task. It took days for
us to organize the men, as well as gather food and water to feed our men. It
was certainly more costly than we expected. I was stuck with the job of management
for the few days it took to haul the army over to Riverwood using carts. A lot
of morale was lost because we only managed to gather half the carriages we
needed, which meant the men took turns in them to get to Riverwood, leaving our
men exhausted upon our arrival.

In Riverwood, there seemed to be no attempt by the
guards in their fortress to take back the town, it was as if they decided to
stay in their fortress and prepare for an assault. However, we expected a trap
and slowly moved forward until we reached the ladder. Amazingly, there was no
ambush, and we descended into the hole and began our journey ahead to take the
fortress and unlock its secrets.

In front of the wooden fortress we saw almost
double Captain Shepard’s estimates for the guards. It turned out they had increased
their size to defend since they knew we were coming, and so our plans were further
delayed to come up with new ones using what little information we knew. All we
could decide on was a full frontal assault. As we had no knowledge of what the
inside looked like, or if there was any alternative entrances or weak spots.
Another choice was no use of fire until the guards on the front wall had been
killed and we had passed the first wall. Because obviously, we didn't want to
burn down the fortress. Taking possibly our only chance of hope to find Sir.
Edward Griefer. And with that, we opened fire upon the guards and marched the
fortress.
