GoldenEye: Source

Mod review

An outstanding mod that did what I didn't think was possible: To revive the spirit of classic multiplayer shooters. And as a person who really enjoyed the original, I can safely say that this is an improvement in every aspect.

The gameplay hasn't changed much, which is good. The only real change is the fact that you can use an actual mouse to look around, which was not really possible on the N64. All the classic maps are back, including my personal favourite (Facility), with updated textures and models. The Goldeneye weapons return as well, giving a great deal of variety and allowing players to find their own winning strategies. And if you're a person who doesn't care much for online play, there is offline play with bots.

Despite the bot AI being a little stupid at times and there's no crosshair unless you press shift, I don't really see any problems with this mod. Great job, modders!

Interaction

Mod review

This shouldn't even be listed as a mod, it should be on TWP as a map pack. A horrible map pack. It reminds me of Portal Underground Story, where it's just bad puzzle after bad puzzle, going in a straight line. There's not even a story here. Not even some voice overs. It's just an overly simple series of puzzles.

Portal: New Adventure

Mod review

Portal: New Adventure is a mod that is too easy and too short. None of the puzzles required much thought, and it took no more than twenty minutes to complete a blind play through. The story is nonexistent, similar to most mods, but instead of the Enrichment Center, we are placed in the "Growing Up Center", which is a stupid idea. Also, the voice acting isn't all that great. I can see why some people like this mod, as it's meant for people who are new to this game, but it's just not for me.

Portal: Prelude

Mod review

Portal: Prelude and Blue Portals apparently have something in common: They both revolve around fling puzzles instead of puzzles that actually make you think hard. The difficulty in Portal: Prelude is mainly caused by this excessive amount of momentum-focused test chambers. However, Portal: Prelude is one of the few mods for this game to actually have an interesting story. The story is the greatest part of this mod, and is worth playing for that reason.

Blue Portals

Mod review

Despite the amazing visual style and interesting AI voice overs, the abundance of fling puzzles makes Blue Portals a bit less fun to play. Puzzles should be about how to solve them, instead of being able to solve them but you can't execute the solution.

Portal Pro

Mod review

While it isn't as good as Rexaura (Which is a known fact), Portal: Pro is an amazing mod that should be played by anyone who owns Portal on PC. The puzzles are perfect. They appear very simple and easy, but usually have a little trick that makes you think much harder. It is also rather long for a Portal mod, which is good. Thirty great puzzles along with five secret maps for players to enjoy. The only problem is the last chapter, the BTS maps, where it gets a little confusing as to what you are meant to do. That, along with the boss battle brought this otherwise amazing mod down a bit.

Gamma Energy

Mod review

While some puzzles are interesting and make you think a bit, the fact that there's not much new here makes this mod not much fun to play. Most test chambers are too simple and require little thought. The story is nonexistent here. Basically, it's a watered-down version of Portal that is not worth playing, unless you are slightly stupid. Don't get me wrong, there are some genuinely fun puzzles, but the majority of them just aren't enjoyable.

Underground Story

Mod review

Simplistic and uninspired level design, misaligned textures, lack of custom voice files and an overall boring experience make Portal: Underground Story one of the worst mods for this game.

Portal : Smile

Mod review

Nothing about this mod is good. Level design? Incredibly uninspired. Textures? Looks like they were STOLEN from Portal Unity, and are misaligned 90 percent of the time? Voice acting? Can't tell, as I can't understand it. New ideas? Aside from the unfair crushers and timed platforms, both of which suck, not much. To sum it up, Portal: Smile is a mod which no one should play if they want a fun and interesting experience. They should go play Rexaura.
