Exactly my thoughts.
Okay men lets put this one guy in a huge metal suit but don't cover the pilots seat with armor or anything and dont wear a helmet because who will think to shoot the pilot!!!
Good thinking.. BUT.. Heck, just think about the average space marines doing daily routine on field without helmet or in less armor! They manage.
My thoughts are a bit different when I look upon them. It looks like a big Space Marine Mother and her tiny Space Marine Baby in a front pack. I guess I want to be a daddy...

lol the pilot is guarded by pretty much the equivilent of 2 void shields. so the more psionically powerful the psyker is the more protection they have there
