Honestly I can't say for certain. One theory I have is that they are the extraction points for the smoke coming from the engine (have no idea what that is actually called).

Ok, so after checking it seems like the T-72 has a side exhaust at exactly that spot, so this thing does too. Was kinda wondering because Western tanks have them at the back usually.
