No, the Tiger II was not "slow", please stop with these old clichees already. It was mechanical unreliable, Yes, but not "slow". It wasn't any slower than any of the other heavy tanks of that time, like the IS-2, KV-1 or M26 Pershing. This is a typical internet clichee that really needs to be buried already. The Tiger II had about the same off-road performance (17 km/h) as the JS-2 or M26 Pershing (18 km/h). You see, no big difference there. The reasons why it was mechanically unreliable was because of the too weak transmission which could not provide enough power to the drivetrain to support the heavy weight of the tank which often led to transmission failure. Another problem was the not sufficient cooling system for the engine which led to overheating of engine and then engine failure. |
