A time of judgement.
Ive always found the flood to be an interesting topic for the Bible.
It's the one time God actually wiped out the entirety of the human race save 1 family.
But why did he wipe them out? That's the part you need to focus on. The flood was in response to the wickedness of mankind. It was recorded that during this time men's thoughts focused on evil continually without relent. It's also says that fallen angels actually slept with women. Which polluted the human race resulting in the creation of giants.
It's believed that the human race became so corrupted that by this time Noah and his Family were the only pure humans left that were uncorrupted. Just as well, Noah and his family were the only ones left who followed the Lord. Could you imagine living in a world were your family are the only Believers left? Dang. Talk about a wake up call.
So naturally, God poured out judgement and flooded the Earth enough to kill pretty much everybody save those who inhabited the Ark. There are people who call God a mass murderer for this... But honestly, I'd rather they all be dead. God wasn't killing innocence, he was killing animals. Because their minds had degenerated to a point that all they could do was wickedness continually. So it was an act of cleansing if you ask me.
On a sidenote, Ive heard somewhere that they actually found the Ark in Turkey I think it was. Unfortunately though, the government won't let anyone near to analyze it. Typical.
Too lazy to respond, so I'll just post an article that reflects how I feel. Dissect it however you wish.

Floods were deemed a common occurrence by ancient folk who deemed it the "wraith" of the gods that was intended to kill them all.
Yet here this God (our God, the one and the only), actually saves us and desires a covenant with us. He desires to see life preserved and respected in a righteous way.
The Christian God is very different from those that the heathen worship and admire. Very different. That should be a clue to many of the uniqueness of Christianity apart from other beliefs. We have a God that actually desires to reside with us daily and help us.
Where with the heathen gods it's lightning bolts and fear forever.
