Look like it was originally meant to be a light fighter like a F-86 rather than an interceptor.
the air superiority fighters didnt exist in that time, i think, there was fighters, intecerceptors, bombers, and fighter-bombers, i think that the f4 and the f100 and f104 were the first designed to be air superiority fighters

Before it had those weird kinked wings and drooping elevators.
Still think the XF8U-3 looked better though.
