Inspired by one of my favorite free game, Space Corps 5:
-Players are divided into 4 teams (preferably 1-4 player per team, depending on how many planes per team), bots are always on.
-Essentially last team standing, but emphasizes on massive battles, min. 5 planes per team, max. 20-30 planes per team (assuming the PC can handle it, heh), for the record SC5 can handle about 100 units per team at a time but that's a completely different story.
-There's 'rank' system, if you managed to blow up someone from the oppposing team, the next time you respawn, you'll get promoted and basically take control of an existing bot with better plane, so does if you screw up too much you'll might spawn in an early MiG-21 next time you spawn.
-Periodical reinforcements system, the amount of how many times each team gets a reinforcement is determined by the game length setting (longer match means each team gets more reinforcement cap) with reinforcements appears each time when let's say, a team has 25% units on map remaining from the max. unit per team cap.

I remember with our current released version I've handled 64 aircraft flying around, but once missiles and aircraft start exploding, performance near-instantly tanks.

VT has been greatly optimised, so performance has been improved a great deal- but I think 64 aircraft firing things everywhere would still push it.
