I created the game (To Aerthen) with hopes of capturing some of the magic the glory days of JRPGs (on the NES-SNES) had; namely Final Fantasy. Though I'd best describe this project as a blend of the former with a bit of Lunar thrown in to taste, and mayhaps even a dash of Dragon Quest? I was inspired by all three and would constantly reference and look at Let's Plays of said series' while working on To Aerthen. It's my best (to date) recreation of that classic JRPG formula.
The game its self is a lighthearted romp across the world of Aerthen as you race to take down the dreaded Voidlord. I wanted to make something that wasn't too goofy, but still family-friendly and fun. It doesn't take its self too seriously, and oftentimes breaks the 4th wall or pokes fun at regular JRPG tropes and conventions.
It features the traditional turnbased combat everyone's come to know and love! There's nothing extraordinary about it, but I tried my darndest to make the best out of something simple. Basically what I would look for when searching for a similarly styled game; lots of loot and unique equipment to find, dungeons that aren't overly long, and boss fight that haven't had their HP bloated for the sake of drawing out the fight.
Although it may have the appearance of an RPG you may find on the NES, it's anything but! It's brimming with quirky and fun dialogue as you get to know the characters without trudging through wave after wave of drama. It's also got a ton of "modern" QOL features such as the ability to save ANYWHERE, being able to run from every battle, and oftentimes having a safe warp out of most dungeons after you've conquered them.
