What is Thorns & Spells?
A 2D MMORPG set in a persistent fantasy world. It was originally launched in 2014 as a basic idea, and further developed in the open among a small community of ~400 players, until 2018 when it shut down. It was re-launched in 2023 with a content expansion "Edge of Time" focused on time travel and modern MMO features like a Raid & Dungeon Finder, and Battlegrounds PvP. If you've played an MMO before, you'll be right at home in Thorns & Spells as the UI delivers all the usual suspects: Game chat, action bar, /say & /shout -like commands, WASD movement, aimed combat, looting, treasure hunting, exploration, and more, in a charming, hand-drawn, 2D world.
Is it free?
Yes, it's free to sign up and play.
Is it a true MMO?
Yes, all players on the server interact in the same persistent world. There are loading screens when changing major areas, but maps within those areas are very large, encompassing several zones. Depending on performance needs, there will probably be about a 1000 player per server limit. Right now, a physical server is synonymous with a game world; but that could change in the future as features and needs change (example: Battlegrounds PvP running on its own server).
Is there PvP?
Yes, there is open PvP except inside altars (resurrection points).
How do I talk to NPCs?
Thorns & Spells has a chat engine similar to old school MMOs like Ultima and Tibia. To speak to an NPC, simply walk up and say hi!
What are the available disciplines?
Einherjar: Melee discipline that uses a Greatsword and Runes.
Night Watch: Melee/Ranged discipline that uses Daggers, Crossbow, and Traps.
Demonologist: Ranged discipline that uses Spells and Scrolls.
Sorcerer: Ranged discipline that uses Spells and Scrolls.
Witch: Ranged discipline that uses Spells, Scrolls, and Brews.
How do I change disciplines?
Speak to a trainer somewhere on the island. There are trainers for each discipline.
Is there a level cap?
Right now it's Level 10, but by this summer it will be Level 50 as all the new zones are rolled out. The plan is to increase the level cap as long as new content is being released.

Currently in open beta you'll have to access Thorns & Spells through the PSP browser, but yes you can play it now. All native handheld versions will roll out after v1 iOS release which is 2-3 months away.

Will this work on the Nintendo3DS browser??
Yes it should do well on the new 3DS browser (see wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Browser_(Nintendo_3DS)#HTML5_games). Thorns & Spells is a <canvas> based game.
Great news. So maybe multi-platform with one server? Idk it's possible but for example AdventureQuest3d has a cross platform servers. Anyway, Happy new year! ;)
That's right, players on different platforms will be able to interact together on a single server. If we have separate servers at all, it will be so we can have different worlds with different rules.
