"Sometimes the path to virtue is riddled with complications. A true hero mustn't be too prideful as to not accept the guidance of others."

The RPG Primer: A step-by-step GUIDE is a narrative driven role-playing/puzzle game hybrid. What starts off as a seemingly innocuous student-teacher relationship between a nameless Hero and his AI companion, "the all-knowing and eloquent" GUIDE, gradually decays into a tale where motives are questioned, lives irreparably damaged, and nightmares realized. Along the way, our Hero will be placed in increasingly more nuanced combat scenarios, where he'll often have to rely on far more than just brute force to navigate through the battle.

Fight monsters, solve riddles, learn elaborate...dance steps. Discover the truth.

More About the Game:

The RPG Primer: A step-by-step GUIDE is both a commentary on and a love letter to the Golden Age of role-playing games. Using the turn-based combat mechanics first made famous by Final Fantasy, Phantasy Star and Dragon Warrior as a starting point, the game introduces new battle dynamics, and new complexities, at almost every juncture. No two battles are exactly alike.

You are a nameless Hero, eager to traverse the path of a select few that have become True Heroes of Legend. Helping you along the path is the AI program, GUIDE. Under his tutelage, you will learn the ins-and-outs of combat, with aims of ultimately facing and destroying The Great Evil.

There's only one problem: What GUIDE says and how the battles actually play out are often at odds. At first, this will lead to some hysterical situations. Eventually, parody shifts to absurdity, and then horror, as our Hero begins to question both GUIDE's motives, and the Hero's Journey itself.

As for the combat sequences, GUIDE's misdirection will often force our Hero to adjust on the fly, using both his brain and the environment to work his way out of peril.

Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Overcome, and discover what lies beneath the surface of this seemingly safe, and docile "tutorial" world.

Game Features:

  • 20 unique combat scenarios, many of which feature integrated puzzles and/or riddles
  • A rich and complex narrative, delivered through a dialog between the two protagonists. No tedious exposition here!
  • Comedy, drama, suspense, intrigue...man eating dandelions
  • Entirely original pixel art, hand-painted backgrounds and other visual delights
  • Original orchestrated soundtrack, and dozens of sound effects
  • A 10-legged Octopus, who may or may not be a parody of a boss from another game. All right, he definitely is.
