Star Wars: Imperial Winter is a free, multi-platform, real time strategy game using the open-source Spring RTS engine. Featuring over a hundred different units for the Galactic Empire and Rebel Alliance, spanning from The Phantom Menace to Return of the Jedi, SW:IW aims to not only contain the best gameplay of any Star Wars RTS, but the most diverse cast of units, including: Stormtroopers, TIE Fighters, X-Wings, stealthy Rebel Commandos, Bothan spies, Royal Guards, Wookiees, "reactivated" Battle Droids, repulsorlift tanks, walkers, and more! Gameplay features include asymmetrical balance, with the two factions playing very differently from each other; territory-based constant-income resource system allowing a fluid economy rather than paying upfront; realistic weapon physics, with every single projectile's path is realistically calculated, meaning your men can hide behind a hill from enemy laser fire but not from an artillery cannon, and many other features.

December 10th. Or 11th. Or possibly the 12th, if you're a crazy Aussie. In any case, we'll be releasing the mod this weekend, unless we find some mysterious major bug hiding within the depths of the mod, which is highly unlikely.

For those out of the loop, Star Wars TA: Spring (usually shortened to Star Wars Spring or just SWS) is a mod for the totally free, open source Spring engine. As you can imagine, the mod uses Star Wars units in an RTS setting. The mod features 129 different units for the Empire and Rebels, with units taken from all six movies and expanded universe (though it is focused on the Galactic Civil War, there are still things such as battle droids. Why? Because they're cool!). The units are asymmetrically balanced; this means just because one side has one kind of unit, doesn't mean the other side does, but instead has something else in its place. Due to the nature of the Spring engine, the game features true physics, deformable terrain, and other fun features.

While many of the models are currently a little rough around the edges (since they were originally created with the 1997 game Total Annihilation's limits in mind), we've done work to the ones that looked the worst. We plan to eventually replace all of the models with higher quality ones, but we feel it's best to release what we have this weekend since it's ready, instead of making the public wait months for them all to be replaced. :)

So, stop by our moddb page to keep up (especially when we add more screenshots tonight), and may the Force be with you this weekend!

Get a better PC to do the screenshots on - playing without the realtime shadows and reflective water doesn't do the Spring engine justice.

Yeah, that map just has very light shadows. Look in the water on the screenshot with the sandbags and such--you can see a group of republic gunships heading towards my base in the reflection. You can also see the shadows if your contrast is high enough, but I don't blame you if you can't see it because of the map.
