This isn't relevant anymore due to how much scrumble ship has changed, but I still want to point it out. Why is the size of the weapon = the size of an entire space suit?
That's still in the game, actually, so it's still a valid question : )
The spacesuits are compression-type spacesuits ( En.wikipedia.org ) and as such, shrink when they're not on a human.
Think spandex. Super spandex.
