I hand painted terraced terrain in Photoshop, with 3ds Max as a 3D viewer to make sure the displacement fits perfectly with my mesh-caves.
A new member is helping apply erosion effects in World Machine.
I want many of the mountains to look like Nā Pali Coast in Kauai, Hi
World Machine only does Z-axis details (heightmaps), so I'm going to play around with Terragen3, since it boasts about being able to generate X and Y-axis details as well.
If all else fails, I'm going to use voxel based modelling for future cliff details. So far I've done the entire cave system in 3Ds Max, but I feel like if I want better quality, voxel modelling makes it alot easier.
