Post news Report RSS About David And His Four Remakes Of Oculight

Finally, Oculight is finished after nearly five years of development. Why did it take so long to finish? Because I remade it four times!

Hello, my name is David Begnaud, I’m a self-taught, multi-skilled, independent game developer located in Vista, California. My path to game design started with modifying the Elder Scrolls III Morrowind. Since 2008, making games has been an educational hobby for me. I’ve made a few PC games such as: Jetta Blade and Robonex. Oculight was inspired by the idea of creating a color matching game where you could move objects in any direction, distance or pattern possible on a touch screen. On March 3rd, 2011, I began development on Oculight. Originally, it was called Blacklight. The game contained monsters that were not in the final game like, elephants, owls, dragons, light bulbs, squids, and bees.

Blacklight was eventually scrapped because of quality issues and title copyright concerns. It was remade into a new game called Retinas. Unlike Blacklight, Retinas contained levels, mini-games, boss battles, and a storyline about a race of eyeball creatures fighting the evil Mr Smile and his hoard of minions. While Retinas was fully playable, it was scrapped after beta testing revealed that it wasn’t appealing to players.

I went back to the drawing board and completely overhauled Retinas until it became a new game called, Oculus Light Bender. The new remake focused more on gameplay quality and graphics rather then extra mini-games and storyline cut scenes. It contained less levels but higher quality gameplay. At this time, I hired the talented Neisy Wilson, a Cuban jazz singer, pianist, and composer, to compose the music. Just as the project was nearing completion, I discovered that the game was not well optimized for mobile platforms. This new discovery along with further quality issues caused me to completely remake the project for a final time.

By observing other mobile game standards and enhancing my own skills, I was able to finish and release Oculight on February 20th, 2016. I am very grateful to everyone that helped make Oculight a reality. Checkout the credits and give everyone involved a big applause! Fireworks for all!
