I must say it's some sort of a shadow man.He possibly places random blocks and spawns on smooth stone meaning mostly in caves or strange stone areas...Or maybe it's a dessert mob spawning only on sand meaning it spawns on beaches or desserts..

If these things are hostile, I shall trap them in a large glass terrarium. I f they are neutral they get a nicer terrarium. If they are friendly I'll let them live within my fortress walls, at least a special area.

you know what would make this mob really boss? it looks for PLACED blocks at night, picks them up and tries to re-create your construction a bit to the side, one block at a time. if you see it. it runs away. if you corner it it digs down and disapears leaving a tunnel behind it, the tunnel ending in a cave or a exit to the surface.
If you know the mass destruction mod there is a goo that eats away at the layer you put it on. I think notch got theis from that just he made them mobs.
