Island Hopping is a 3d retro-arcade style platformer originally developed by one of our team members for the Ludum Dare 48-hour competition. The objective is simple: don't hit the water. The player will attempt to navigate through an ever faster path of island that vary in size, shape, and point value. When they inevitably hit the water, your distance and score (among other statistics) are sent to a high score leaderboard.

First of all, this game is absurdly fun and addictive. I love the simplicity and purity of it; it's like a twitch-gamer's Tetris. Thanks for making it. :)

Suggestions:

  • Make the island generation algorithm ensure that a green or orange island is always within the maximum jump distance, given current speed and theoretically perfect execution, so luck doesn't play as large a role in score.
  • Subtly increase the pitch of the green island collision sound as your combo increases, so you get a sense of how high your combo is getting without looking at the indicator. This was one of my favorite aspects of Mario Kart SNES which wasn't carried over into subsequent versions: there were a lot of right-angle turns that could only be navigated by jump-turning, but if you pulled it off you were reward with every increasing speed and engine pitch, creating a sensation of break-neck speed.
  • Perhaps do something similar for your forward speed, like altering the pitch and/or tempo of the music.
  • Let users choose whether they see the local or global scoreboard after a match. The global scores don't change much, and just aren't that important to local players who are competing among themselves.

Anyway, those are some things those of us at my house thought would be nice. :)

One other thing: I noticed you released the source for version 1. Any chance you could release the source for 1.2, so I could play around with implementing some of these changes myself?
