Decades have passed since the war erupted between the United Space Federation and The Alliance of Free Worlds. A bloody conflict that seemed to have reached a stalemate is now about to change, when a thrid faction suddenly appears. Take control of a fleet commander returned from exile, rise through the ranks of the United Space Federation forces and join an epic war across the stars. Start with a small group of frigates, and climb your way to controlling battleships, carriers and planetary bases, in huge space battles and boarding actions. Build space stations and orbital facilities to fortify your position, build your fleet, extract minerals and research upgrades. Execute boarding actions using marine special forces, and bombard your enemies with orbital long range cannons.

Did you guys ever think about letting bigger shipps explode with some larger pieces of space junk? If they remain that could create atmosphere, and you could also enable players to enable salvage them.

I think you could add more detail to make it more epic.
Such as pieces can break off BEFORE the ship blows up, like if a big shot from a cannon hit a ship that would break a chunk of the ship off.
And maybe not have the ship pieces just float off at the speed of light, make it slower and not as violent, the pieces should float off in big chunks rather than just disintergrate into tiny pieces.
Take a look at Star Wars: Empire at War capitol ship destruction system, when capitol ships die they break into 2 or more large pieces and they slowly float off into space.
What he said make it look alot less animated but nice work if a bit unbalanced, i sure hope the shields in the final game isn't so weak :)
I think you're on the right track with the explosions. They're looking decent, but aren't quite perfect yet.
I know it's your game, but if I may suggest, have a look at how Hegemonia did its explosions: Youtube.com
There are some good examples around the 9:45 mark. And keep in mind, these are explosion effects on an engine that's nine years old. I'm sure you guys could make them even better in Gemini Wars. :P

explosions look cool, though i would love to see the ships get acctually battle damaged from each attack ^^ like scars from the laser blasts lol
the ships need to slowly collapse and break apart... look at starship troopers... these explosions dont look apropriate...
