A horror mod with survival and action elements... and a lot of new sounds, new textures, new sprites and new enemies. This is not an easy one.
UPDATE 11/12/2019: I added some high res textures and changed a little within the maps.
This mod has a different gameplay compared to the usual Duke 3D. Runningspeed is decreased, Duketalk is disabled (this would disturb the atmosphere). There is no map overview und no static background music. There are new enemies with new behavior and you also take more damage from them. So, be careful and don't waste your ammo... you will need it.
If you play this like you play Duke3D you will die a lot most of the time. So don't rush. Take cover. Take out the enemies one by one. Exploration will be rewarded with health and ammo.
Something will seem familiar to you. It's also kinda tribute to Half Life.
IMPORTANT:
- If you have issues with textures (wrong textures, plain black textures) you have to remove possible ART Files from your Duke folder which do not belong to my mod. If there are other TILES0xx.ART files in the folder the game will use these.
- The light is made with polymer only. If you turn it off you see nothing. I made it that way due to atmospheric reasons.
- It's highly recommended to play with as little as possible ambient light
- If you still have problems write it in the comments :-)
INSTALL:
- Unzip all the files in your Duke 3d main folder
- Start whitenoise.bat
- have fun!
This is my very FIRST MOD ever and I hope you will enjoy it, though it may be a little bit hard.
19.06.2019: Finally I managed to record a walkthrough. You can watch it on Youtube.
INGAME SCREENSHOTS:
Just beat the map and it is a weird one to say the least. Not mentioning the tone as it is intentional, but what I mean is that it sits halfway between Red 5 and an Eddy Zykov map with no heavy scripting and close to no custom assets and it works fine. Maybe the vanilla aspect blended with creepy elements weirded me out.
Rest assured there is at least one guy waiting for the episode to be completed.
Hey, thanks for your little review. I don't know what Red 5 is, but it could be that you will think of the dream map by Eddy.
I updated the mod with another map. Maybe you would like it to try it, too? :)
I was excited when I saw the update. I'll try it out and get back to you! :)
does this map need polymer lighting, cause the TV doesn't appear for me
The light is made with polymer only. If you turn it off you see nothing. I made it that way due to atmospheric reasons.
I went through 1.2 and holy ****, what a ride it was! It was "DN3D meets Jacob's Ladder".
I didn't expect it to become a full fledged mod and with nice scenery effects on top of that! The monsters rising in the flooded corridors, the falling catwalk, the hallucinations... They are all convincing.
I'm eagerly waiting for the next update! :)
Just a quick bug report though: make it so the player cannot backtrack after the falling catwalk hallucination, this effect is broken when doing that.
Hello, I played for about 2 min. Atmosphere is great and it looks really cool and scary. Unfortunately, it quickly became unplayable for me.
I know the "README" states:
"Make sure you have the latest version of eduke32. In previous versions there are major TROR issues. You get squished when you enter specific sectors or you get stuck."
I'm sure this is happening to me right toward the beginning, but I don't know why. Polymer is on, and I'm using current eduke downloaded from: Dukeworld.duke4.net
More specifically, I'm instantly dying as soon as I walk into darkness here:
Any help/tips anyone? :(
Hey Rage, thanks for commenting on that issue. Well, I got the same problem as you when I play with the latest version of eduke32. So you have to use an older one. Unfortunately I can't say which of the latest version will work. I'm going to figure out which eduke I used exactly when I recorded the video and will link it here. Sorry about that :-(
I added the link in the description. Now it should work. If so... have fun with it :-)
Wonderful! Tried out your link and was able to get past that part. Hopefully there are no more problems as I play through. Thank you so much!
This mod is creepy as hell. Period. The moment I loaded the first map, it chilled me to the bone and made my hair stand on end. Its a mod that is made by someone who knows how to scare you more with psychological horror and atmosphere, instead of just jump scares. Play alone, in the dark, with headphones. One of the best Duke 3D mods I've ever played. Great job!
Glad you could make it through the "problem-part".
It seems you enjoyed the mod. Thanks for your nice words! :)
Yep :D My only complaint, at the beginning of B3, when you enter the room with the two forklifts, you really need to add some ammo. A total of four enemies spawn, and there was no way I was defeating them with the few rounds I had left over from the previous map. I was too lazy to load an old save and replay being super conservative on ammo, but that would have been absolutely necessary...and would have detracted from the fun. Instead I just cheated to get more ammo. A few extra shotgun shells would have let me put up a fight while still having that desperate "I barely have enough wits and resources to survive" vibe I feel you were going for.
Start whitenoise.bat
but where whitenoise.bat ?
If i start wnoise_eduke32.exe - i run only original duke.
Ok, i found. Parameters for start:
wnoise_eduke32.exe --nosetup -usecwd -g wnoise.grp -x WNGAME.CON
Oh, I thought I put it in the zip file. Damn.
Thanks for pointing it out!
Now it's in.
Extremely impressed by this project. Atmosphere was amazing for a Duke mod. In particular, the map altering its geometry was super effective, kept me completely creeped out. If you ever decide to put more effort into this, I would like to offer the following advice:
A) the combat in the last level, especially with copied Doom monsters, wrecks the atmosphere and was also astonishingly hard
B) I absolutely could not figure out how to pass the room early in map 2 (I think) with the crates hanging on chains, had to cheat through.
C) The fullscreen jumpscare images are unnecessary - you do a great job setting a creepy tone, but those blow right past that subtlety and just make it a game about being startled by unrelated disturbing pictures. Take 'em out, IMO.
Great work! Hope to see more from you!
hey there, sorry for the late reply.
first of all thanks for detailed comment :)
A) you're right, that's not easy. it's quite hard. but if you pick a lot ammo (for some you have to look around a bit) and don't rush through and cover i think it's good to manage. but stil not easy^^ in retrospect 2-3 fewer enemies at the boss fight would be better.
B) I'm not sure which room you mean exactly. I think the one in the first map, where you have to push a button so a crate would move and you can pass. Youtu.be
C) yeah, the fullscreen jumpscares aren't really good afterwards. even the noise appearing before a jumpscare. i thought it was a nice touch. I would use that again, but not as a jumpscare.
but don't rely on seeing another update. it took a lot of time to finish it. I started to make an update (new textures, changes in level design, atmosphere, lighting, jumpscares etc.)
but it just takes too much time. time I really need for another stuff. every now and then I came up with new ideas for gameplay, but I can't code. It's a trial and error stuff which also takes a lot of time to figure out and I don't want to bother other people for every code snippet.
What a cool mod! Highly recommend.
Excellent work. This was a lot of fun and very suspenseful. Very well made too.
