When we launched DOOM two months ago, we were so excited to finally be putting the game in your hands and it’s been a thrill to watch you play, hear about your experiences and read your feedback. We couldn’t be happier with the response and want to thank everyone for making our first two months such a success. Here at id Software your feedback and excitement continues to fuel the work we do on updates, DLC and new ways for you to play the game.

Our first big update near the end of June included a number of new features, like the option to use a classic center-screen gun placement – a particular favorite of old-school DOOM fans – a campaign photo mode for composing and capturing incredible in-game screenshots, as well as sky window props for SnapMap, to name just a few. All of that on top of an extensive list of fixes and optimizations.

Just two weeks ago, we released our Vulkan update for PC players. This powerful new API allows DOOM to run as fast as possible with high visual settings on a wide range of Vulkan capable hardware. DOOM is the first triple-A game in the world to take extensive advantage of Vulkan and we hope you are enjoying the benefits. If you want to see how DOOM for Vulkan will work with your PC, very shortly we will be releasing an update to our campaign demo – the entire first level of the game – for Vulkan. Incidentally, the updated demo will also allow players to try out the photo mode and center gun mode as additional bonuses.

This week on July 29, we look forward to releasing Free Update 2, which includes two new multiplayer game modes. Exodus is a one-flag capture-the-flag mode with an added twist of constantly moving bases and flags. Sector is an objective-based capture-and-hold mode where players compete to take control of zones and then hold them to score points. Both modes can be played on any existing or future maps. This update also adds some tremendous tools and fun new capabilities for SnapMap fans, including: customizable weapon wheel functionality – so players can carry and select multiple weapons, just like the campaign; jump pads with logic to set distance, speed and direction; 30 brand-new Hell-themed modules; an expanded weapon list; a new playable demon – the Mancubus – as well as a laundry list of improvements to the Community HUB, editor and logic capabilities. Check back here early next week for a detailed list of additions and changes. These new modes and all of the SnapMap content and updates are free to all players.

To celebrate the release of these two new modes and to get everyone geared up for our annual QuakeCon multiplayer frag-fest here in Dallas, this weekend is our first DOOM double-XP weekend starting July 29. If you’re looking to unlock an armor suit you’ve been dying to use or want to crack the next echelon, this weekend is a great time to do so.

Next week, we are thrilled to be launching our first premium multiplayer DLC, Unto the Evil. This package includes three new multiplayer maps, a brand-new playable demon called The Harvester, a new weapon (the EMG Mark V pistol), the new Kinetic Mine equipment, a bad-ass robotic armor set with new customization options, new hack modules, taunts and more. Everything in Unto the Evil is usable in all existing maps and modes.

With the launch of Unto the Evil and the introduction of several new maps, we also want to keep our community playing together, so we’re introducing a feature of DLC we call PartyPlay. Here’s how it works: If you haven’t purchased the premium DLC and a map comes up that you don’t have, but you’re currently in a party with another player who has purchased the DLC, you’ll be allowed to continue playing. Conversely, if you have purchased a premium DLC pack, anyone in your party can play any of the maps from the DLC as long as they’re with you.

Of course our work doesn’t stop with these updates. We’re currently hard at work on an arcade-style scoring mode with leaderboards for players who want to continue to test their skills in the campaign maps. Plus, we can’t wait to release three new free-for-all modes later this summer including the highly requested deathmatch – not to mention additional updates, premium DLC and free SnapMap features and content.

From everyone here at id, we want to say thank you again for the support and feedback over these first two months. We look forward to bringing you much more.
