3. Installing / Configuring / Running / Uninstalling Cold War
---------------------------------------------------
3.1 INSTALLING COLD WAR
To install Cold War:
- Launch your favorite terminal console. In case you want to install
Cold War for all users, make sure you are the super user.
- Run the coldwar_demo.run file to begin the installation. Note that it will
require about 400 MB of free space in your /var/tmp directory.
If you wish to use another temp dir, set TMPDIR environment variable first.
- In case you have GTK 1.2 installed and you run the installation from
within X11 session, you will get nice graphical installer. Otherwise
you will get nice ncurses installer.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation of Cold War.
3.2 CONFIGURING COLDWAR
To configure Cold War globally, you may edit the config/config-default.txt
in the installation directory. This config is copied to user-specific config
in ~/.coldwar_demo/config.txt each time Cold War is launched and the user-specific
config doesn't exist yet.
To make user-specific changes, simply edit ~/.coldwar_demo/config.txt.
Note that any changes of the in-game settings are automatically stored to this
config as well.
In particular, you might like to adjust the screen resolution by adjusting
the window_width and window_height values.
See also the "Known Issues" section regarding the OpenAL configuration.
3.3 RUNNING COLD WAR
To run Cold War from console, simply type coldwar in your console. This
assumes that you have installed the symlink in your binary path during the
installation.
To run Cold War from your desktop menu, simply choose the Cold War menu icon
in your menu. This assumes you have installed the menu entry during the
installation.
Use arrow keys, Enter and Escape to navigate through the menus. Please take
a look at the menus under Options/Controls/Input Mapping for the current
binding of the keyboard keys and mouse buttons.
3.4 UNINSTALLING COLD WAR
To uninstall Cold War, simply delete the directory you have installed Cold
War into. In case you want to delete saves and configuration as well, delete
~/.coldwar_demo directories in the home directories as well.
---------------------------------------------------
4. Known Issues
---------------------------------------------------
Some users have experienced problems when using OpenAL with their OSS
drivers. Therefore we recommend that you configure your OpenAL properly
using .openalrc stored in your home directory. The example provided below
should work for most users:
;; Default mostly-works settings.
(define devices '(sdl alsa native))
(define alsa-out-device "default")
;; Uncomment to try alsa with four speakers:
; (define devices '(alsa))
; (define alsa-out-device "surround40:0,0")
; (define speaker-num 4)
