Another Star is an 8-bit console-style RPG crammed into a single 128×128 tile sheet, yet it still manages to bring you a vast world to explore. Secrets are hidden everywhere, and you never know what you might find on the next screen. Those who take the time to explore instead of merely rushing to the next objective are certain to be rewarded.

Not only are these features nice and convenient (being able to change them mid game), but it can also add some replay value to each playthrough!

I think these sorts of features are even more beneficial for indie games, because you have a smaller pool of players. Even short RPGs tend to be big timesinks, and not everyone is going to want to (or be able to) devote as much time to it as they would major titles like Final Fantasy, Fallout, or Dragon Quest.

Letting the player choose not only how difficult the game is, but how much time they're willing to devote to it--and giving them the power to change their minds later--is a pretty big boon, I believe, for not that much extra work (so long as you planned ahead).

Description

Everyone who wants to complete the game should be able to see it through to the very end. When you begin you'll be prompted to select a battle difficulty. In easier modes the enemies you encounter will have less health and are less likely to use their abilities against the player.

You can also freely alter the amount of gold and experience enemies give, using one of four "character growth" settings. Level grinders will love the game's "old school" setting, while those who want to breeze through the game with an overpowered party can set it to "high".

No matter your preference, there are no extra rewards or punishments for picking what you want. The game can be fully enjoyed at any difficulty. You don't even have to complete the game before ramping the battle difficulty up to its hardest.

And don't worry about changing your mind later. You can freely alter both the difficulty and the character growth settings from the options menu at any time outside of battle.
