Hello IndieDB!

To be brief, I'm largely a 2D (mostly c++) programmer who is looking to attempt a 3D project. I've been browsing for engines for days now and I don't feel any closer to finding the right engine, only merely closer to hitting my download cap.

I guess the prerequisites are only network ability, and preferably Linux capability.

I realize I can google game engines and find a multitude of lists, but I'd like a little more current developer's opinions and ideas.

I can go into greater details if need be.

Quake? Quake 2? Quake 3? Doom 3?

Go play some Quake 2: q2server.fuzzylogicinc.com
It's like Source v0.9, only... better!
Play Paintball for Doom 3!: d3server.fuzzylogicinc.com
Doom 3 Paintball to the Max!

I've never used the id Tech engines, so pardon me if I get details wrong.

So I'm reading id Tech 5 won't end up being open source.
How is id Tech 4 straight from source? Is it more worth while to wait for a full release from iodoom3?
That uses Radiant (?) as the editor?

I don't know anything about idtech5/Rage.

I'm betting there will be no iodoom3. The only current options are stock engine or dhewm3. that one breaks all current mod support. Radiant is the editor, if you use the stock engine then all the editing tools are built in except the C++ IDE/compiler.
