The Longest Journey HD graphics mod. Upscaled in-game videos (FMV) are available as a separate download. Please, read the installation instructions below.
1. Install The Longest Journey. If you don't own the game, you can buy it on GOG or Steam.
2. Extract the contents of the downloaded zipped package to the game installation directory. If asked, overwrite all existing files. Make sure that the path to the mod looks like this: 'The Longest Journey\mods\TLJHD\'. You can also download upscaled in-game videos (see 'Files' section) and extract them to the game directory as well.
3. Download and install ScummVM for your system: ScummVM. This is an essential step, because the original game engine doesn't support modified assets and overall have many issues on modern systems.
4. Launch ScummVM, click Add game... and choose the game (not the mod!) directory.
5. Make sure that Load modded assets option is enabled.
6. Switch to Graphics tab, click Override global graphic settings, then enable Aspect ratio correction and Fullscreen mode options. Enable anti-aliasing for 3D models. From my experience 4x is more than enough.
7. Confirm your settings by clicking OK.
8. Click Start to launch the game.
- 22.06.19 - Updated 3 backgrounds
- 09.06.19 - Fixed a bunch of small issues
- 18.05.19 - Initial release
ResidualVM from here does not work. Starts the window and closes. And from the official site it starts, but does not find the game
Please, try this build: Mega.nz
I've just uploaded it on ModDB, but it has not been authed yet.

Just a quick question. Did you download the daily build from the official site? That's the version you need to use for The longest Journey. The main release still has no support

Wanted to say thank you for this great mod.
Works like a charm. Guess I'll have to play this through to the end this time!
The text isn't supposed to be italicized is it? The original text is in basic Arial from what I remember, with maybe occasional italics. Everything else seems to be working fine for me and I copied the fonts and fmv and hd mod correctly but it has made 100% of the text slanted/italics. Any idea how to fix?
Those are the original fonts from the latest version of the game. Steam version comes without any fonts at all, this is why you have probably never seen them before. If you don't like the original fonts and prefer 'Arial', you can completely remove 'Fonts' folder from the game directory.
How to change resolution to 1080p?
I don't quite understand what you mean, but try this: I.imgur.com
On residualvm.exe, of course.
Love the mod! i can finally play it.
But is there any way to implement my old save?
Found the location (appdata\roaming\residualvm\saved games) and that the savegames have different names.
But when i loaded the game, my inventory is empty. so it's kind of hard to continue. I'm on chapter eight so there is a long way if I restart.
I think old savegames don't work with newer versions of ResidualVM. But you can download my savegame right at the beginning of chapter 8: Mega.nz

Hello sir, thanks for the mod. Can you tell me what is ResidualMV ? Comments are talking about it but I can't find it in the folders. I'm new to all of this.
Please, follow the instructions ('Description' section on this page).
The first few minutes I tried were very enjoyable!
I'm a bit annoyed that widescreen support seems to have disappeared, though.
The Longest Journey is a 20 years old game and it has never had widescreen support. Stretched - yes, widescreen - no. You can always turn off aspect ratio correction in ResidualVM settings and enjoy ugly strecthed graphics. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Edit game > Graphics, uncheck Preserve aspect ratio.
Thank you!
Personally, I don't even notice any stretching, so it's all good!
Hi,
Excellent work.
Just one thing...Can you tell me if there is a way to remove those Mouse Cursor trails when you bring the mouse outside the game area? The issue is that it messes the upper area of the game where the Inventory and Game option icons are.
Thank you.
Could you take a screenshot? I don't have any trails. You should create an issue on GitHub if you really have such a problem: Github.com It is not related to the mod.

with ResidualVM 0.3.1 on OSX, I cannot add the game as it says "ScummVM could not find any game in the specified directory!"
I am adding the game folder, not the mod folder. any tips? windows version you've provided in the comments works fine..
ok, got it working, it works with the residual for osx in the files section.
previously, I was using the one from the official residual webpage.
Yep, and it's written in the installation instructions on this page.
I'm having issues with the fonts. When i open the game with residualvm it says the fonts are missing.
I followed the instructions and extracted the zip to the game installation directory.
This is what the path looks like 'SteamLibrary\The Longest Journey\Fonts & Mods\TLJHD\
Is the font folder supposed to be somewhere else? i haven't moved its location that's how it was extracted.
This is the message in the 2nd window of residualvm (don't know the correct name for this window lol)
WARNING: You are missing recommended data files:
The 'fonts' folder is required to experience the text style as it was designed. The Steam release is known to be missing it. You can get the fonts from the demo version of the game.!

The instructions say to extract the contents to the game directory. That's all. Don't create, move or rename any folders. Fonts path should be: '/The Longest Journey/Fonts'. Mod path: '/The Longest Journey/mods/TLJHD'
ok, played the game on OSX for a few seconds. now as I came back to the game, loading a savegame through Residual crashed instantly. When I choose to start the game instead, I get to the menu, click "start journey" and it crashed immediately. cannot play on osx in any way now.

Thanks for reporting. I suppose it's not related to the mod, so I'll tell about the issue to ResidualVM developer. Or you can create an issue on Github yourself.
ResidualVM has been updated: Moddb.com or Mega.nz

Is there any way to use my regular TLJ save game on this mod? If not, could anyone upload a save from this mod at the beginning of Chapter 7?
No, ResidualVM uses its own format. Here is a savegame: Mega.nz
Copy it to \AppData\Roaming\ResidualVM\Saved games\

Can I install this mod if I play through Steam and have savings in the game? (I don't want to lose those). Thanks.
You can use your Steam version of the game, but you have to play through ResidualVM and the original savegames are not supported.
Can you play on widescreen resolution?
Only in stretched mode or with the original aspect ratio and black bars on left and right.
Syberia 1 & 2 HD, when?
same question here too!
Hey buddy thanks a million for this HD texture pack mod, it looks and runs alot better than the original version of the game (and the DGVoodoo version as well), I can now play @ 60 fps in 16:9 with crisp visuals!
It's my first time playing The Longest Journey too so it's even more sweet that the HD pack was released as I was about to start playing this game for the first time!
Thanks for the updated version.

I see this was updated again, and a smaller size too. No release notes - What are the changes brother?
I've improved the quality of 3 backgrounds. I'll try to be more specific next time.
Out of curiosity, when you install the HD Mod, can you remove any folders with the same name that are directly in The Longest Journey folder?
Great job on the Mod. The visuals are a lot nicer on full screen!
No, don't remove anything. Those folders include not only the graphics, but also all the other game assets: scripts, audio, 3D models.
Thanks to this great mod the graphics have seriously improved. :)
I have a problem though: the in-game videos.
They play somewhat choppy and with stuttering sound. The mod seems to work fine for others, so the problem must be on my end.
I have tried to use the latest version of binkw32.dll (1.9.24). Makes no difference.
If I play the videos using a stand alone player, no problem.
And in the original game (not the mod) videos play fine in-game.
So what am I missing here? A setting in one of the .ini-files? Or something in residual VM?
The operating system? Seems unlikely. The problem manifests itsself on both Win10 64 bit and Win7 32 bit.
Who can help me troubleshoot this issue?
Do you use the provided beta build of ResidualVM? Moddb.com Because the latest official build still have problems with video playback. But if you have the issue even with a beta build, you should definitely report it on Github: Github.com
Before I report this issue on GitHub, I would like to ask one question.
Could it be that ResidualVM's system requirements are too high for my old laptop?
If you think this could be the case, there's no point proceeding further ... but if a Pentium T4200 (dual core, 2GHz), ATI Radeon HD 4500 (512 MB VRAM) and 3GB of RAM should be sufficient to run this mod, than something's clearly not right.
If you want, you can see what the problem is. I made a (low res) screen recording and uploaded it to WeTransfer.
We.tl
You don't need a beefy PC to run this mod. But as far as I know Bink decoder has always been a bottleneck. ResidualVM developer optimized it in the beta build, but maybe not enough. I will tell him about the problem.
So, it seems your CPU simply isn't powerful enough to decode 1080p Bink videos (in ResidualVM). The suggestion is to check the selected Windows power plan and try 'High performance' option.
Okay, I tried your suggestion, though first I had to enable high performance using PowerShell.
Everything set to the max and it made no noticeable difference.
I replayed the section from the screen recording I posted earlier.
In the image below you can see the CPU usage during the replay. The CPU only once briefly maxed out at 100% and otherwise hovered between 60% to 80% (see the section between the red lines).
I.imgur.com
Shutting things down (like sidebar and mail-notifier) to reduce CPU usage also makes no noticeable difference, by the way.
I was hoping to be able to replay TLJ on the laptop, but it looks like I'll have to wait till I return home in August. Then I'll be able to copy everything over to my gaming PC that has a Ryzen 7 1700 octacore and a GTX 1660 Ti. Should definitely be powerful enough. ;)
Thanks anyway for trying to help.
