I tried making a shortcut like this:

"E:\Steam\steamapps\common\Quake 2\rerelease\quake2ex_steam.exe" +set game q2turbo

But it just jumped to Steam which then said “app configuration unavailable”.

Ah. Yes you can't run that directly for some reason. You'll have to add it to the Quake 2 launch properties inside of Steam

Thanks, I got it working now.
It definitely improves the feel of the gunplay, but one thing that would help even more than the faster weapon switching,
is a decreased time you have to wait after firing, before you can switch away to another weapon.
Is something like that possible?

I had considered it, but decided against it. I think it would be a bit too cheap, and it would allow you to do stuff like switching back and forth between weapons to shoot faster.

If the firing speed was increased, it might feel better...

Anyway, thanks for the feedback!

Pity. Couldn't hurt to ask.
I've always fantasized about a Quake 2 that plays in that “cheap” way you described. Even if it meant dailing back the damage of virtually all the weapons, or doubling enemy numbers and speed. Just pure gameplay expression with no waiting for anything and no benefit to hiding behind corners for repeated pot shots.
I'm sure increasing the firing speed would definitely do some of the heavy lifting though.
Thanks for the mod. It's still my favourite way to play I've found thus far.
