How many people play this mod?
Depends on the time of day. Typically there is a line battle server up with 15-32 players on. Sometimes these are scattered into groups of 10 over several servers.
so the maximum players in a server is 32?
Depends on the server. Some are 24, 32, or even 64.

No, you only need Source SDK Base 2007 (in the Tools library), which comes free with Steam.
Anyone can play this mod for free without buying any games.

What the hell is this, Every time I download this it saves as a .[1] file. How can I solve this problem?
Tell me the original game is required for this mod !?
For the numpties who can't be bothered to find out themselves...
How to download:
1.Install Source SDK 2007 (2007 one not 2015!) on Steam in the "tools" menu which can be found by going to Steam library and clicking "games" by a small search bar on the left just under the main tabs (under the back and forward arrow tabs). That step will be the most difficult if you haven't used Steam before.
2.After installing Source SDK on Steam (may take a while), run it and when it loads to the menu, you may exit.
3. After installing and running source SDK 2007, you will now need to start downloading bg2 2.2 which is just above. Click the RED DOWNLOAD BUTTON and wait until it starts downloading (should be around 517mb's).
4. Run the installation once it has downloaded and it will start installing the game.
5. Once finished, press FINISH (simple right!)
6. Now you can play bg2 2.2!
You will need to download the newest patch (2 2.3 at this moment in time) to play with other people since everyone else will have probably downloaded it.
TO DO THIS, GO BACK TO THE SUMMARY OF THIS PAGE AND CLICK THE BG2 2.3 DOWNLOAD PICTURE!
1. Click RED DOWNLOAD BUTTON
2. Once downloaded,....
Extract the 'bg2' folder in the .zip file to your '...\Steam\SteamApps\SourceMods' folder.
2) Select the option to OVERWRITE the existing files.
3) All done!
This file doesn't show up as .exe for me. And I can't open it :(
I figured out that you have to type .exe at the end of the file and opened it...
