This mod is an attempt to recreate the 2003 Beta style of Half Life 2. This project is similar to my previous work "Beta Aesthetics", but about a different era of development, which was in 2003.
This mod is an attempt to recreate the 2003 Beta style of Half Life 2. This project is similar to my previous work "Beta Aesthetics", but about a different era of development, which was in 2003. In my opinion, this era is very similar to what we could see in the release, but there are also some significant differences. The atmosphere of the 2003 era is more "dark" and "desaturated". Gray and white colors predominate, the sky is not blue, but mostly gloomy and gray. In city 17, you will no longer find bright orange and yellow houses, only the same type of black and white buildings. The coast looks like the bottom of a dry, almost dead sea. In general, the game with this mod looks more empty and depressing.
When creating the mod, I used materials and textures from the leaked beta version of Half Life 2. Almost all the textures of the retail game have been reworked and replaced. There are not many changes in the sound design, but the biggest is the complete replacement of the Vortigaunts' voiceovers with the one that was in beta. A couple of the soundtracks have been replaced with their earlier versions. The textures of the main characters, such as Alyx, Eli, Mossman, Breen, etc. were taken and "fitted" to the retail models in Photoshop. The differences between the textures of the main characters are not so striking. Eli is now wearing a bright white T-shirt, lighter pants, and a green Yale sweater. Mossman's sweater is whiter and cleaner, Alyx's jacket and T-shirt have become lighter, her belt has changed color. Dr. Breen's textures are noticeably different in Beta. His suit is a lighter shade of brown, his face and hair are lighter, and face is less detailed than it is in the final game. I think you understand what is the plan of the difference between retail models of people and those in beta.
It is worth saying that the addon does not change the maps themselves, as well as the plot. Same game, different atmosphere. Some models and sounds I took from mods that will be in the credits.
Enjoy the game!
Very nice job, i love it!
Okay, so.
The installation method is extremely easy, and I'm glad it tells you how to install it in a txt file. When I booted up the game, it didn't look too promising so I had low expectations.
I click on new game and start up Point Insertion, and I was disappointed to see no changes to the G-Man but hey, can't have everything.
Everything in the train station looked great (apart from Breen's model, maybe change it to the Consul?) and it was until I made my way to the plaza.
The Citadel looked so out of place, there was no fog surrounding its peak which made it feel less-immersive. I also think the height of it was scaled down, looks so short now. I decide to skip to Highway-17 and it looks pretty good, even the antlions got a change and I adore it. I kill a few antlions, headcrabs and zombies then I find my first combine soldier. I took them out easily and I after killing two others, I go to check the corpse for details. But turns out they disappeared? I shook it off and moved on.
I continue down the road to find three more soldiers battling it out with antlions. I kill them off, move onto the soldiers and they're gone? Clearly something is wrong here.
I find Colonel Cubbage and... he's just a regular citizen. Nothing to tell me that this man means business.
But anyway, this is a decent mod. Could use some work and I have a couple of suggestions such as changing the citadel, making c17 have a green atmosphere and loads of fog. Other than that, however, I did enjoy most of what I played.
I'd rate this mod a good ol' 7-10. Has some bugs, but great effort. Excited to see any updates!
