The term "mod" is an abbreviation for "modification", which is why you can also say "a mod". What is hidden behind it can be guessed from the word's origin: The Latin "modificare" means something like "moderate". In relation to computer programs and games, this is also true to a certain extent: a "Mod" shortens something, but sometimes also extends it.
