What's FPS Games?

"Headshot", "Monsterkill", "Terrorists win" - this and the like were almost every gamer in the ear before. It's not by chance that the genre of first-person shooters is one of the most popular in the video game world. We show the evolution of the genre from the beginning to the present and give an outlook on what's to come.

1974 was an eventful year. US President Nixon resigns after the Watergate scandal, Germany becomes football world champion, the Rubiks Cube is invented. It's easy to miss that it was also the year of birth of one of the most popular video game genres: the first-person shooter. Silently and quietly, a team of NASA interns Maze War conjured up the black and green screens. Exploring a maze in first-person perspective and other players - that was new. And it was just the beginning. In the following years, video game developers recognized the potential that was in the ego perspective. Seeing the game world virtually through the eyes of the character provided for an unprecedented level of immersion - gamers were no longer just a part, but the center of the game. You yourself were the hero of the story. The first person shooters were born.

Typical FPS Game Features

Some typical features of these games: fast-paced action that requires quick reactions and nimble fingers from the player. A frequently realistic depiction of violence that has repeatedly been in the crosshairs of critics and youth advocates over the years. In addition, there are game graphics and physics depiction, which depict the real world more and more realistically, thus illuminating and even breaking the boundaries of hardware.

You do not have to be a video game nerd to know names like DOOM, Half-Life or Counter-Strike. This suggests how important these games were for video games and popular culture in general. Many older titles today are hard to come by and can hardly be run on current systems. However, due to their commercial success or popularity, some of the games have been overhauled, pimped out, and made accessible to younger generation gamers by dedicated developers or dedicated fan programmers. Most games on our list are therefore available for a small fee or even for free - one more reason to jump into one or the other virtual battle.

What has happened over the years on the genre "First Person Shooter"? Which developments have taken place in terms of graphics, game mechanics, storytelling and multiplayer options - and which are just around the corner? All this we show in our picture gallery. We do not name every shooter in our list that one or the other die-hard fan might have expected. Particularly controversial titles like the well-known classic Wolfenstein 3D we have omitted. Overall, we've focused more on playful milestones and technical innovation than commercial success.

We're looking forward to creating some awesome FPS games and sharing them here on Indiedb!
