Ripply Water Mod For Wrath: Aeon of Ruin v2.0 March 31, 2024
by Gremlin 'MrC' Forester
Description:
This mod adds fancy water to Wrath: Aeon of Ruin retail.
Requirements:
Wrath and a decent graphics card. I use a 1050ti (at the time of this updated release which seems to work pretty well).
Install: (some assembly required):
This is a better method as it'll stack the mod on top of the original game, no need to run it as a separate mod (although you can if you want). That way saves should not be affected as this is only a graphics mod.
1. Unzip/Drop the contents of WrathRipplyWater2.zip (pak099.pk3,water.cfg) into your kp1 folder. I randomly picked pak099 as the name to leave room for any future updates. Content in paks with a higher number will override content from paks with a lower number. Idk, probably wasn't needed, rename as you like.
2. Add the following to your autoexec.cfg using notepad (or your tool of choice):
r_glsl 1
r_water 1
r_water_hideplayer 2
r_water_lowquality 1
r_water_resolutionmultiplier 0.25
2.1 OR...
exec water.cfg
Which will automatically run commands found in water.cfg.
2.2 OR...
While in game bring down the console by pressing shift+esc and type 'exec water.cfg' in the console. You shouldn't have to do it every time as it should set these into your regular config.
3. Just run the game as usual.
You can set these in the console as well if you want to raise or lower the quality of the water like r_water_resolutionmultiplier 1 will give you much clearer reflections/refractions but may come at a performance cost. I've kept it pretty low here for both performance plus it works well with the look of the game (imho).
If you're having performance issues open the console (shift+esc) and type "r_water 0" to go back to a somewhat similar look to the original.
Uninstall:
Just delete pak099.pk3 from your kp1 folder and set r_water 0. And that should be it.
If you find any issues, please let me know and I'll work on getting them sorted. Thanks for trying this out and hope you like it!
Usage/Legal:
If you use this in your own mods, credit would be nice.
No commercial use as the water caustics (used for the diffuse maps) were made using a free water caustic generator. Dualheights.se
I made the normal maps so you can use those for whatever purpose though.

It looks like this mod is not compatible with the retail full version of the game.
The mod is good only for the demo version, but on the release version 1.0 it does not work. And in some places it even breaks water textures. If anyone knows how to fix it, please do so.
Hey, sorry for the late reply. I didn't see that there were comments on this! Will check it out and see about getting a new version out for the retail version of the game. As for launching without a batch file you could do the same with a shortcut or mess with the launch options in Steam?
Good. Looking forward to the updated water mod. Thank you.
Fixed the intro water, so far that was the only major issue I could find although I have yet to run through all the maps. Were there other maps or areas that you found where the water was broken? Thanks for the help!
Also on Outro the water disappears. On other maps it just doesn't work anymore as it did in Demo.
Makes sense, outro uses the same shaders as the intro so that got fixed. Odd that it's not working for you in the regular maps, I've uploaded the new version along with new instructions for making it work within the base game vs. as a standalone mod (since it's just a content mod). I'd say give that a try and see if it works.
Thank you very much. It's all working now.
Sweet! Thanks again for the help and for checking out the mod. Enjoy!
Hello. You made a water mod for the Wrath Aeon of Ruin game. And then it was fixed at my request. But we're talking about something else. Tell me, can you help me to make the same water mod for the game Quake 2 and addons to it. I put together my build, tried to make such a water, but I did not succeed. If you can help, then reply to me, I will send a link to my build. Thank you.
Not sure how much I can help but sent PM we'll see what we can do.
This mod is a must have, it makes the game look amazing:

Thanks!
Thanks!
This is a cool mod, but it's not well optimized as it causes some serious FPS drops in some levels ("E1M4: The Gardens" really lags with this mod).
Thanks! Yea it can get pretty performance heavy at times depending on your hardware since the game wasn't really made with something like this in mind, could try playing with the quality settings in those areas. Might be interesting to see what the performance gain is.
