Description

This is currently a small mod intended to be expanded over time. The first chapter, "Oz", is a single level that represents what I hope to be a series of exciting and interesting ideas created with the Source Engine.

Is this the updated version you were working on?

Yep!
Some play additions, weapon balance, sound design, bug fixes/optimizations, and a long overdue graphics pass.

It’s also in a mod format now, so I’ll just update this as I add "chapters".

I finished it!

I should preface everything by saying that I got a tiny bit spoiled because I follow you on TikTok so I saw most of the streams with this level, so, not a big spoiler or anything, but just a few things I recognised from before. It was a bit cool actually. Remembering it being talked about. What it meant, why was it added.

Anyway, I'm typing this after my first successful run. There's definitely stuff left unfound so I'll do more.

What's the most special thing about the level...
I suppose it's the oldschool feel. I don't want it to sound cliche, but it's just so true.

I liked the methodical feel of the map, maybe it feels mechanical to some? For me it made me more sure that I'm at the right place every time. Like I knew that by reaching that place, I didn't break the map, I'm in the zone that's allowed at this stage, I'm progressing.

I decided to immediately go with Hard... admittedly after hearing that it's too hard in places. It was properly Hard. I've played many maps that don't know how to keep being fun on Hard. This didn't stop being fun.

One more thing, kinda related to the last paragraph. Did you intent it to be played on Hard? Because when you start the mod, you actually packed the config.cfg file in the mod so the settings you use, get applied for other users. One thing it affects is difficulty selection, (it defaults to Hard), and it also affects key bindings. Which makes me suspect it wasn't intentional?

Or if it was, then I'd suggest instead putting 'skill 3' in autoexec.cfg but removing config.cfg completely. Because that saves all the settings, mouse, keyboard, sound, and it may throw people off.

Anyway, I had a great jolt with this map, sad that it's over now, am waiting for more, and I'm hoping we'll see more mapping streams in the future.

I remember playing the old version of this and I think the changes you've made since are generally for the better.

The escape after getting the module feels noticeably improved and graphically things are nicer. The lack of ambient soundscapes is super noticeable and the fact the map is almost completely silent most of the time feels strange. I think the fight with the turret after getting the RPG is still kind of anticlimactic and having the player acquire the RPG and then exit through a tiny doorway into the turret's line of fire encourages you to just hide in the door and it's not particularly fun.

I also found all the dolls. Would have been cool if something happened as a result of you finding them all but it's neat all the same. Maybe you could string the maps in order with level transitions and have them recall how many dolls you found in each map and then if you find them all in all the maps you get a reward at the end?

Interesting.
There should be ambient sounds and music throughout the experience.
Curious, did you go back, get rockets, and return to the small door each time?

I tried using the rockets through the small door at first but it's really annoying how the door shuts automatically on you. The top window has like no cover and is very far away from the turret so it doesn't feel like a safe or fun place to fight from.

And yeah, I loaded it up again and there were definitely no soundscapes.
